Betty Marie Helton, a beloved daughter, mother, and cherished grandmother, entered the presence of her Lord, peacefully on August 5, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on May 21, 1938, in Ducktown, Tennessee, Betty devoted her life to her family and community, exemplifying a spirit of love and service that touched all who knew her.
Betty was a devoted homemaker, taking pride in her role as a wife and mother. She cherished her family, and her grandchildren were the light of her life, bringing her immeasurable joy. A woman of faith, she served at the First Baptist Church in McCaysville/Copperhill for many years, contributing her time and talents. Betty's love for crafts and baking delighted family, friends, and her church community alike. In her later years, she dedicated herself to serving at the senior center, continuously demonstrating her servant's heart and desire to help others.
Betty is preceded in death by her father, Christopher "Lum" Hughes; her mother, Madelyn Hughes; husbands, Herbert Newman and Charles Truman Helton; her son, Barry "Bo" Wilson Newman; her brothers, Charles (Earline) Hughes, Robert (Bowser) Hughes, and Junior Lee "Doad" (Elaine) Hughes; and step-daughters, Roxanne Walker and Rosalind Helton.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Tiffany (Jeff) Cole; her adored grandchildren, Edward Cole, Robert Cole, and Elizabeth Cole; her brothers, Glen (Betty Jo) Hughes and Lewis (Myrna) Hughes; in-laws, Rowland (Sue) Cole; step-daughters, Trudy (Jerry) Morrow and Charlotte (Rex) Fryer; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and step-great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service honoring her life will be held on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church in McCaysville/Copperhill, with Rev. Matthew McDaniel and Rev. Don Padgett officiating. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Ronald Martin, Robert Cole, Edward Cole, and Jeff Cole. Interment will follow at Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Turtletown, Tennessee.
