Betty J King

May 11, 1941 — April 15, 2024

Betty Jo King, formerly of Blairsville, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2024, at the age of 82.  Born on May 11, 1941, Betty was the daughter of the late Norman Allen and Edna Odell Harkins Teague of Union County.  She attended Bunker Hill School, going on to graduate from Union County High School in 1959.  She was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church.

Betty was preceded in death by her late husband Archie Clifford King (March 15, 1991).  She worked at various jobs in the area, which included companies such as Georgia Boot, Levi’s and as a manager and biscuit maker at a local restaurant, but it was her occupation with the Towns/Union County school systems, as a bus driver and paraprofessional for special education students that was dearest to her heart.  Together with Clifford, she was an active member of the Union County Band Boosters, serving several years as its president.  Betty was also a skilled seamstress.  In addition to band uniforms, she made numerous homecoming, prom and wedding dresses.  Betty and Clifford also opened their home, and their hearts, to foster children, providing a nurturing environment for hundreds of children over the years. Even after Clifford’s passing, Betty continued as a foster parent.  She eventually relocated to Acworth, Georgia.

Betty enjoyed spending time with family and friends, cheering on the Braves (except for Chipper Jones), watching NCAA Women’s basketball and fussing about the family dogs (the late Lucky Gamel, Ricky King, Moosy Gamel and Loosy Gamel). Surviving family pets include Copper and Penny Gamel, Berkley and Annie Gamel, Milo and Luna Gamel and Ellie, CJ, Jax and Freddie Coleman.

Betty was also preceded in death by her brother Ray Teague, sister Mary Teague Harkins, sister Claudine Teague King, brother Larry Teague and son Michael King.  She will be lovingly remembered by her children: daughter Donna (Tommy) Gamel, daughter, Tammy (Alton) Coleman, daughter Michelle “Misty” King, daughter Casey “Sissy” King, her grandchildren Brandon (Katrina) Gamel, Brian (Vivian) Gamel, Mikayla (Matt) May, Ashley (Michael) Rutledge, Alton Coleman Jr. and her great granddaughters Emilia Gamel and Caraline Rutledge. She is also survived by her sister Sherry (Dennis) Gibbs and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation for Betty will be Wednesday 6pm - 8pm at Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville.  The service will be held at the chapel there on Thursday at 3pm with Pastor Jerry Helton officiating.  Pallbearers will be Randy Ledford, Michael Holmes, Matt May, Seth Crawford, Russell Jones, and Drew Dobbins.  Honorary pallbearers will be Dennis Gibbs, Tony Harkins, and Mark Taylor. Interment will be at Union Memory Gardens.

The family would like to extend its love and appreciation to Dr. Edwards, the Chatuge Regional Nursing Home staff and Traditions Hospice staff for their kindness and compassion while caring for Betty during this time.
