Betty and her family relocated to Knoxville, TN during her school years. As WWII began, Betty’s dad Fred began working at the top-secret nuclear research facility in Oak Ridge, TN, where the atom bomb was being developed. Upon graduation, Betty and her mother returned to McCaysville, GA to live among family. Betty began working with Southern Bell as a Customer Service Representative where she met her future husband and later married in 1952.
Betty had many talents that included flower gardening, vegetable growing, and canning. She was an outstanding cook and enjoyed preparing meals and baking for her family and others. Betty had a tremendous passion for reading and she enjoyed every minute she could with a good book. She inherited her love of reading from her mother, and they shared the same love of reading throughout their lives.
Betty was a devoted Christian, mother, wife, and family member. She was an early member of Temple Baptist Church in Blue Ridge throughout her early adult life. She was a devoted church member, Sunday School teacher and Vacation Bible School Principal for many years. She was also a loving caregiver during times of family illness to her mother-in-law, followed by her own loving mother, and ultimately her husband until his death.
As a longtime resident of Fannin County, Betty spent the last twenty years of her life in the Atlanta areas with her daughters where she volunteered with the “early readers club” for the Ocee Library serving the Atlanta-Fulton County areas. She loved working with children and watching and encouraging them to learn to read.
We will forever love and miss our caring and supportive mother who was our rock of faith and foundation throughout our lives. “Best Mom ever made!”
