Hilda T. McGriff

January 3, 1932 — November 6, 2023

Hiawassee

Hilda Townsend McGriff was born January 3, 1932 in Alpharetta (Fulton County), Georgia to Ernest Joe (EJ) Townsend and Martha Ruth Wood Townsend. She passed to her heavenly home November 6, 2023. A service of worship and Celebration of Hilda's Home Going will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church in Blairsville, Georgia on Sunday, November 19, 2023 at 1:00pm.

Hilda was preceded in death by her best friend and husband, Roy Anderson McGriff. Their 63-year marriage was one of commitment, love, short arguments, quick forgiveness, selflessness, and fun! Later in life, Hilda enjoyed recounting to others that their families attended the same church and when she was just in 1st Grade, she made up her mind to one day marry Roy who was six years her senior.

She will forever be remembered for her unwavering love and dedication to her family. Surviving Hilda are Sister: Norma McHann; Children: Mark McGriff and Susan McGriff (Gene) Boyd; Grandchildren: Chase (Erica) McGriff, Kelsey McGriff (Brian) Mihich, and Zane Boyd. Great-grandchildren: Connor Mihich, Reese Mihich, Scottie Rose McGriff, and Eli Scott. These little ones brought immense joy into the last few years of Hilda's life. Several dearly loved nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

From an early age, Hilda was remarkably tenacious. During the first decade of her life, she experienced two very serious health events that brought her close to death. Although these events left her with some lingering lifelong struggles, it was Hilda's faith, hope, trust, and relationship with Jesus Christ that never ceased drawing her to a place of confidence, peace, and stability.

Prior to the effects of dementia, Hilda was a "daily prayer warrior" who maintained an ongoing prayer list consisting of several well-worn pages. She enjoyed cooking, reading, walking, watching football and the news; however, her passion was maintaining the outside of her home, cutting her grass, caring for her roses, and shrubbery.

A Hilda State of Mind Written By Gene & Susan Boyd for Hilda's 80th Birthday Celebration

As the grass begins to grow

Little do those blades know

That I see them as they blow

And soon I will cut them low.

As the paint begins to fade

A plan must be made

Soon I will have a paintbrush in hand

I know what goes on in my neighborhood

This is a trait passed down to me from my dad.

My cooking is superb

My mother Ruth made sure of that.

With all the things I do

It is a comfort to know

My tools are at hand.

I dress to a T

Because that is just me.

My hair is my crowning glory

Just ask Shannon at the beauty parlor.

I'm still such a lady

Because I'm Hilda Townsend McGriff

Born January 3, 1932!
