Sarah Irene Shuler, daughter of the late Hayes Hunter and the late Lydia Dyer Hunter, was born on January 17, 1920 in Union County, Georgia. Irene was a graduate of Young Harris College and the University of Georgia. She married Clarence Shuler on June 10, 1939. Irene was a vital part of her community and county. She was an active member of Choestoe Baptist Church and a teacher in the Union County School System for 40 years. She was preceeded in death by her husband, Clarence Shuler, brother, Howard Hunter and sister, Hazel Collins. She is survived by; son, Fred Shuler and wife Bonnie of Hiawassee, GA, daughter, Carole Merritt and husband Jerry of Canton, GA, special nephew, Harold Shuler of Young Harris, GA, special friend, Jim Dobson of Blairsville, GA, 4 sisters, Blanche Swain and Doris Souther of Blairsville, Lucille Johnson of Oak Ridge, TN and Mary Lou Walker of Fayetteville, GA, 2 brothers, Franklin Hunter of Blairsville, GA and James Hunter of Warner Robins, GA. Grandchildren include; Samara Nicholson and husband Ken, Christa Parton, Lisa Williams and husband Tom, Lee Merritt and wife Kim; Great grandchildren. Macy Williams, Griffin Merritt, Hayes Merritt, Carley Coffey, Caitlin Sheffield, Patton Nicholson and Sabra Williams.
Irene loved the mountains of North Georgia where she lived her entire life and will be remembered as a woman of few words, a gentle spirit, faith in God and a wonderful teacher.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at 4 pm from the Choestoe Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Stillwell officiating. Music will be provided by Bud Hunter and Bill Collins. Interment will follow in Choestoe Baptist Church Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are: Chris Souther, Bill Souther, Jamie Hunter, Johnny Johnson, Jimmy Hunter and Ken Walker.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-9, Tuesday, April 24.
Flowers are accepted, but if you wish, the family suggests that donations may be made to Choestoe Baptist Church, Building Fund, 4455 Choestoe Church Road, Blairsville, GA 30512.
