It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Jack Richard Thompson, a beloved husband, father, and cherished member of the community, who departed this life on May 6, 2026, at the age of 79. Born on July 2, 1946, Jack lived a life characterized by service, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community.

Jack was an esteemed firefighter, whose exemplary career began in Naples, Florida, where he proudly served as fire chief. Later, he brought his wealth of experience and compassion to his role as a volunteer firefighter at Station 10 in Blairsville, Georgia. His passion for mentoring young firefighters was legendary; Jack took pride in passing on his knowledge and passion for the profession, ensuring that the brotherhood of firefighting would continue to thrive. He enjoyed spending time with a close-knit community of fellow retired firefighters. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge as well as a Shriner.

In addition to his heroic service, Jack was a lover of history and trivia; he even started a trivia group. He possessed a deep appreciation for nature, finding joy in hiking to breathtaking waterfalls and spending peaceful moments feeding the deer. Among his many treasures, Jack held a cherished collection of firefighter memorabilia, each piece representing a memory and a bond forged through years of dedication.

Above all else, Jack was a devoted caretaker and lifelong companion to his beloved wife, Charlotte Thompson, to whom he was married for 60 beautiful years. His love and commitment to her were unwavering, reflective of a partnership built on mutual respect and affection.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Lee Thompson and Daisy Marie Gertrude Thompson; and daughter, Deborah Kaye Thompson.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Charlotte Laspee Thompson; daughter, Dianne Flanagan; grandchildren, Jason Griffin, Sara Flanagan, Brooke Flanagan, Justin Flanagan, and Kyle Flanagan; great-grandchildren, Jax Williams, Annabella Flanagan, Tyler Flanagan, Derrick Flanagan, and Kaden Flanagan.

A funeral service in honor of Jack will be held at Cochran-McDaniel Funeral Home & Crematory, Blairsville Chapel, on May 12, 2026, at 4:00 PM. Prior to the service, there will be a visitation from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, allowing friends and family to gather and share their cherished memories of Jack.

Jack Richard Thompson will be deeply missed, but his legacy of bravery, mentorship, and love will forever echo in the lives of all who had the privilege to know him. His spirit will continue to inspire those he touched, a reminder of the profound impact one life can have on many.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack's memory to Union County Volunteer Fire Department.
