Jane Laird Hill, age 93, peacefully passed away in Murphy, North Carolina on April 9, 2025.
Jane Laird was born in Sublette, Illinois to Mirven Leason Bovard and Mary Jane Bovard. Jane married Edwin Benjamin Hill of Spartanburg, South Carolina on February 28, 1951 in Greenville, SC.
She was preceded in death by Leason Brodt (sister), her husband, and a son, Christopher Bovard Hill.
Jane Laird is survived by her daughter Laird Parsons (Mark), sons Benjamin (Dot), Michael (Patricia), and Patrick (Lisa), her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.
Jane Laird's lifelong passion was music; she attended the Juilliard School and spent years as a concert pianist. In 1956, Jane Laird and a group of concerned citizens under the guidance of Father Ed King, rector at the time, established St. Mark's Episcopal Day School. Mrs. Hill formulated a comprehensive music appreciation curriculum that included glee club, musical performances, social dancing, and etiquette. She taught over four thousand students in a span of thirty-seven years. Mrs. Hill often heard from former students who fondly remembered (and sometimes feared) their experiences in music class. In addition to elementary education, Mrs. Hill taught piano at the college level and for over fifty years private music lessons.
A memorial service for Jane Laird will be held Saturday, November 15 at 2 pm at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Cocoa, FL. Memorial donations in her name may be made for the choir at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 4 Church St, Cocoa, FL 32922
