Another beautiful soul went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 7, 2025. LaVerne England Cobb, age 92, joined her beloved husband of 62 years, Wilson C. Cobb in their Heavenly Home. LaVerne was born October 12, 1932, in the Owltown Community of Union County to John Ernest and Mamie Laura Alice Everett England. Along with Wilson, her parents, her sister Louise Patten, in-laws Luther & Eddie Cobb, sister-in-law & brother-in-law Christine & C. Lloyd Smith were there to welcome LaVerne for her Heavenly reunion.
LaVerne learned to read at age 3 and never stopped. She was a graduate of Union County High School Class of 49, Young Harris College, and North Georgia College. She touched hundreds of children’s lives during her 37 years as an elementary school teacher, starting at age 19 at the two-room Pleasant Grove School in Union County. She also taught at Young Cane Elementary, but spent most of her career at Blue Ridge Elementary. She achieved her lifelong dream of becoming a librarian in 1981, serving the last 7 years as school librarian at Blue Ridge and Mineral Bluff Elementary schools. After retirement, she spent many years chasing grandchildren and helping Wilson run Sword Printing Co. They enjoyed visiting with the many customers and friends who stopped by the shop.
LaVerne was a faithful member of Bethel Methodist Church, serving in many ways including Vacation Bible School director, Sunday School teacher, and church historian. She & Wilson loved being active members of the community. They could usually be found at Circle J in Blue Ridge or Cook’s in Blairsville visiting with family and friends. LaVerne was a member of the Fannin County Methodist Church Council; Fannin Retired Educators; a charter member of the Beta Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa; Fannin County Public Library Board; and the Morganton Chapter of Eastern Star. Her favorite achievement was just being Mamaw LaVerne!
LaVerne leaves behind a loving family who will join her one day. Daughter Teresa (Steve) Ross; Daughter Helen (Dan) Stanley; Grandchildren Heather (Ashton) Maevers; Luke Ross; Sean Stanley; Jake Stanley; Great-Grandchild Emily Maevers; Brother-in-law Judson Patten; Nephew Roy (Patti) Smith; Great Niece Jacque Smith; Great Nephew Marty Smith; Informally Adopted Daughters, Lesa Richards Johnson & Dana Richards; informally Adopted Grandchild Noah Johnson; and a host of cousins and dear friends.
