Mary J Hyatt

April 3, 1931 — August 26, 2021

Mary Jean (Pritchard) Hyatt passed away late August 2021 at the age of 90 at her home in Blue Ridge, GA, from natural causes. She was born and raised in Akron, OH, where she managed Lawson's convenience stores. She met and married the late Gordan Hyatt, Sr in 1951. They lived in Akron for several years before moving to Georgia where Mary earned her LPN at Pickens Technology School.

Mary worked in a nursing home before joining the American Red Cross. She was in charge of setting up and managing blood drives in Fannin County and other surrounding areas. She was lovingly known as 'Bloody Mary' because her blood draws were quick and precise. Her travels included disaster relief with the American Red Cross all over the United States and Puerto Rico. She loved to help others in need!

After retiring from the American Red Cross, Mary enjoyed volunteering at the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. She loved sharing the history and culture on the train tours. You may have even seen her at Christmas time as Mrs. Claus!

Her hobbies included raising African Violets (of which she earned several awards), crocheting, cross-stitch, embroidery, and reading.

Her feisty, quick-witted spirit will be missed by her family and friends. She leaves behind a daughter, Linda (Pritchard) Shelhamer of Zelienople, Pennsylvania, a son, Gordan L Hyatt, Jr, Blue Ridge, GA, two grandchildren, Tammy (Shelhamer) Cantella of Zelienople, PA and Steven Shelhamer of Harmony, PA, and two great-grandsons, Joseph Cantella and Joshua Cantella, both of Zelienople.

Memorial contributions may be sent in memory of Mary to the American Red Cross.
