Mary Sue Colwell, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully in her home on August 27, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. Mary Sue was born on May 31, 1927, in Blairsville, Georgia, to the late Marvin and Molly Akins.
Mary Sue was a caregiver at heart. She dedicated her life to taking care of others and making a difference in their lives. Whether it was comforting a friend in need or lending a helping hand to a stranger, Mary's kind and compassionate nature shone through in everything she did.
One of Mary Sue's greatest joys in life was cooking. She had an undeniable talent for creating delicious meals that brought people together. Her kitchen was always filled with good food and fond memories. Family gatherings were made even more special by the love and care she put into each meal.
Mary Sue's love for her grandchildren knew no bounds. Nothing brought her more happiness than spending time with them and showering them with affection. She cherished every moment shared with Erin Marie Bishop, James Seth Colwell, Jeffery Gooch, Stephen Gooch; ten of her great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Mary Sue's love will forever be imprinted on their hearts.
Friends and family will gather to pay their respects and celebrate Mary's life at Cochran Funeral Home & Crematory of Blairsville located at 41 Hunt-Martin St., Blairsville, GA 30512. The visitation will take place on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at First Baptist Church of Blairsville Rock Chapel at 11:00 am, with Pastor Ricky Powell and grandson-in-law Rev. Adam Bishop officiating. Visitation will follow prior on Thursday, August 31, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Special music will be presented by Minister of Music Ed Lawrie. Burial will be in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Mary Sue was preceded in death by her loving husband, Hughes Colwell. Together they shared a deep and unwavering bond that lasted throughout their years together. Mary's heart was filled with cherished memories of their shared experiences and the love they had for one another.
Mary Sue's legacy lives on through her surviving family members who will continue to carry her love in their hearts. She is survived by her adoring children, Nancy Margaret Gooch, James Hughes Colwell, and Melinda Susan Colwell. Her presence will forever be felt by her grandchildren: Erin Marie Bishop, James Seth Colwell, Jeffery Gooch, Stephen Gooch, and their spouses; ten of her great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
In this time of grieving, let us remember Mary Sue's radiant spirit and the joy she brought into our lives. She taught us the importance of kindness, compassion, and nurturing others. May we honor her memory by embodying these qualities in our own lives.
